The World Health Organization defines the word “Fall” as an event which results in a person coming to rest inadvertently on the ground, floor or other lower level. Unfortunately, each year, there are 424,000 deaths that are associated to falls around the world. Of these tragic events, adults over the age of 65 have not only the highest risk of falling due to arthritis, joint pain, heart conditions, injuries and challenges on the stairs, but they also represent the highest percentage of these falls.

In the United States, about one third of the 65 and older population will suffer a fall this year, according to the Center for Disease Control. This fact shows us that falls are the leading cause of injury to elderly Americans. Obstacles in your home, including staircases can be a threat to safety, independence and possibly financial security if a fall results in the need for medical attention.

The National Council on Aging gives us 6 steps for preventing falls among older loved ones in this article
