The American Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed to law 27 years ago today. The law aims to protect Americans with disabilities. It has paved the way for the American society to be more inclusive with the most comprehensive federal civil-rights statute.

ADA enabled easy access to transportation as well as opportunities in life at work and other public and private places. It is the reason behind having wheelchair ramps, lowered drinking fountains, and other commonly seen facilities for the disabled. As time progresses, there will be the need for improvement on these policies. Progress continues as more advocates fight, not only through the legislative aspect, but through bringing awareness and changing minds and hearts for the disabled.

According to the US Census, nearly 1 in every 5 citizens have some form of disability. This is about 19% of the population. 30.6 million people have difficulty walking or climbing stairs, use a wheelchair, cane, crutches or a walker. Acorn Stairlifts has helped thousands of Americans overcome their mobility concern by providing a safe and secure solution for the stairs.
