Monitoring your cholesterol levels is important to help prevent the risk of heart disease and stroke. Along with different tests, there are different foods that can help balance out your HDL (“good” cholesterol) and your LDL (“bad” cholesterol) levels. By adding foods that lower your LDL, the harmful cholesterol that clogs arteries) and cutting back on foods that higher your HDL, will help keep your body healthy and low at risk for heart disease.
 
According to Harvard Medical School, there are 11 foods that can help lower your cholesterol. These foods will give you a good source of fiber and polyunsaturated fats. The recommended good foods to eat are:
     1. Oats
     2. Barley and whole grains
     3. Beans
     4. Eggplant and okra
     5. Nuts
     6. Vegetable oils
     7. Apples, grapes, strawberries and citrus fruits
     8. Foods with sterols and stanols
     9. Soy
     10. Fatty fish
     11. Fiber supplements
 
There are also kinds of foods that you should avoid to keep your levels low. Foods that contain saturated fats like red meat, whole-fat dairy products, eggs and some oils can increase your levels of LDL cholesterol. Foods containing 0 trans fat are also beneficial to your heart health. Trans fats are a chemical byproduct that turns liquid vegetable oil into a solid margarine, preventing these oils from turning rancid.
 
Aside from making sure you have a well-balanced diet, watching your weight and exercising frequently can help keep you healthy and at a lower risk for heart disease.
