September is Healthy Aging Month and today is Aging Awareness Day! Both occasions aim to shine a light to the sensitive topic of getting older. Contrary to the common notions about aging, it has aspects that give a wider meaning and more depth to living. The drive behind the initiative is to encourage everyone to live a healthy life by eating right, being active, and connecting to the people you love and your inner self.
 
Health Aging Magazine’s editor-in-chief and creator of Healthy Aging Month, Carolyn Worthington said, “it’s never too late to find a new car, a new sport, passion, or hobby.” The magazine gives you 10 Tips for Reinventing Yourself that touches on the various aspects of physical, mental, social, and financial well-being.
 
According to HealthyAging.net, here are 10 great ideas you might want to put to action as shared by the publication:
 
1. Do not act your age or at least what you think your current age should act like. What was your best year so far? 28? 40? Now? Picture yourself at that age and act it. Some people may say this is denial, but they say it’s positive thinking and goes a long way toward feeling better about yourself.
 
2. Be positive in your conversations and your actions every day. When you catch yourself complaining, rather change the conversation to something positive.
 
3. Distance yourself from those who have a negative attitude on life. They will bring you down you and stop you from moving forward. Instead, surround yourself with energetic, happy, positive people of all ages and you will be happier too.
 
4. Walk like a vibrant, healthy person. If you’re afraid of falling, try and take bigger strides and walk with your heel first. This will improve your posture and help you feel more confident about not falling.
 
5. Stand up straight! Are you holding your stomach in, have your shoulders back, chin up? Fix your stance and practice it every day, all.
 
6. Smile more. Research shows people who smile more often are happier.
 
7. If you’re feeling lonely, pick up the phone and make a call to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. You can also do one or more of the following: volunteer your time, take a class you haven’t taken before,  or even grab lunch with a loved one.
 
8. Walking a bit a day can improve how you age. If you have a pet, take them out around the park.
 
9. Take the time to set up your annual physical and other health screenings, Being informed about your health and what you can do to improve it will help you not only help you age gracefully, but it will also help you feel younger on the inside. 10. Figure out a new hobby. You may have an artist lurking inside you just waiting to be tapped. Have you always wanted to play the piano,  knit a blanket or create a work of art? Sign up for classes that interest you that can guide you in finding a new hobby (it's also a good way to meet people too!)
