Can't decide on whether you should buy a new or reconditioned stair lift? This page should help you decide.
Cheap is not always cheerful
If something is too good to be true, it probably isn't. The dealers who offer to get you the cheapest used stair lift may be giving you a stair lift that is unsuitable for you and your needs. When buying a new stair lift from Acorn, you know that it will be manufactured specifically to you and your needs. This means that you'll be receiving brand new parts and a 12 month warranty as standard.
What to look out for
If you spot any of the following things when someone is trying to sell you a stair lift, it might be more trouble than its worth.
- Is Cable, Chain or Rope hauled - The stair lift will be noisy, jolty movement and oily
- Has a Trailing Mains Power Cable - Can be unreliable, won't work in a power cut and will be time consuming to install
- Is not DC Powered - The stair lift will lack smoothness whilst in motion and cannot be operated when there is a power cut
- Does not have a Swivel Seat - The stair lift is outdated and potentially hazardous particularly at the top of your stairs. It will also be difficult to get on and off the stair lift
- Does not have a Rack & Pinion Drive - It will lack stability and be noisy
- Does not have an Overspeed Governor - The stair lift is unprotected from an uncontrolled descent, if a major drive system failure should occur. If a major drive system fails the stair lift could plummet to the foot of the stairway, with unthinkable consequences
- Does not have a status display system - It will be impossible for you to diagnose a fault without a costly home visit each time there is a fault with the stair lift

Why a reconditioned stair lift can be trouble
Because a stair lift is reconditioned (used), there can be problems you will naturally encounter such as the following:
- A lesser warranty package, if any
- Curved stair lifts are difficult to transfer across staircases
- Parts are harder to come by if the stair lift is an old model
- Older stair lift models may be unsupported by a local dealer because the model is obsolete
- May require frequent services as parts will be worn, which would result in longer wait times for help
