How to Adjust your ACORN Stair Lift
Re-tuning the Remote Control Handsets
The ACORN Superglide 120 stair lift is equipped with 2 infra-red type remote control handsets (fig.1).
The handset works by emitting an invisible light signal that is picked-up by a receiver in the stair lift and operates effectively in both high and low ambient light levels. For optimum performance the handset should be pointed directly at the stair lift, however, one of the characteristics of infra-red, is its ability to ‘bounce’ off walls and ceilings, so you will usually find that the stair lift will react to a signal from the handset pointed in any direction. The handset is powered by a 9v battery, which should be replaced annually.
Make the stair lift ascend by pressing and holding the red button.
Make the stair lift descend by pressing and holding the green button.
If you have two stair lifts in your home, you will need to change the frequency of one pair of handsets, so that any one handset will not command both stair lifts.
This is a simple procedure:
- Remove the battery cover on the underside of the handset (opposite side to the buttons) and remove the battery (fig.2)

- Remove the 4 small machine screws that hold the handset halves together, with a small Philips type screwdriver (fig.3)

- Identify the red dip-switch, mounted on the circuit board within the handset (fig.4)

- The factory setting is #1 switch to "on" and #2 switch to "off" (fig.5)

- Change the switch #2 to "on" so that both switches are in the "on" position (fig.6)

- Re-assemble the handset.
- Using the toggle switch, run the stair lift to the foot of the stairs and swivel the seat so that a number 4 shows on the digital display.
- Press and hold the toggle switch in the down direction (even though the lift is at the bottom of the stairs). At the same time press the green button on the re-tuned remote control handset. Hold for 10 seconds and release.
The remote controls are now re-tuned and will not affect the other stair lift
