Mona Schaffer is a 96 year old trumpeter and oldest bandmember of the locally famous Ohio musical group, The Moonlight Serenaders. The group was founded in 1951 by local Masons and Schaffer has been the only original bandmember keeping the music alive for the last 68 years.
Music has always been a big part of Schaffer's life. As a teenager Schaffer learned how to play the trumpet. Her mother and aunt shared both had a passion for music. It's where she learned where to play the trumpet. "My mother played the clarinet and the sax, and my aunt played the sax and clarinet and accordion, and so they needed a brass player and that was me."
“I’ve been in so many bands, I can’t remember them all” Schaffer states. “Music keeps you young. And, what you don’t use you lose, so just keep playing. I don’t play as well as I used to, but I’m still playing.”
