Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2023—5 Ways to Honor the Memory of MLK

12:00am & Tips and Advice

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.”

-Martin Luther King Jr.

On August, 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr., a man with a dream, stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C and addressed the nation with a speech that forever goes down in history.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.... I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.”

Today on Martin Luther King Day we honor the life of MLK Jr.—the man who not only had a dream, but the man who manifested his dream into motion, starting a movement that forever changed the future of America. The man that stared adversary in the face and fought for what was right—equality, liberty, and justice for all, regardless of the color of our skin.

When is Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day takes place on the third Monday of January every year. This year, in 2023, Martin Luther King Day falls on Monday, January 16.

The day serves as an opportunity to celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an astronomically influential American civil rights leader.

5 Ways You Can Honor Martin Luther King Jr. On MLK Day 2023

1. Take some time to learn more about MLK’s life and legacy.

How can you appreciate MLK Day if you don’t know much about the man and legend himself?

Whether you watch a documentary on his life, visit the library to read some MLK material, or attend an educational seminar honoring his memory, there are many resources available that can give you more insight into his memorable life.

2. Celebrate civil rights by participating in local MLK Day events and parades.

Equality and civil rights are concepts well worth celebrating, so as King famously said, “let freedom ring.”

See what events and parades are going on around you on MLK Day. Get out and enjoy the sense of brotherhood, sisterhood, and community that we wouldn’t have today, had it not been for King.

3. Donate to organizations continuing to fight for equal opportunity and against racial inequality.DR. MLK Day

While we have come a long way throughout history, thanks to heroes such as Martin Luther King Jr., the fight for equality and equal opportunity is never over. There is always room to learn, grow, and do better.

You can help support this worthy cause by donating to organizations that fight to preserve and further the freedoms that we exercise.

4. Carry on King’s good works by volunteering in your community.

King was a man of character, morals, and philanthropy.

You can carry on his legacy of humanitarianism through acts of service such as volunteering in your community.

Whether you dedicate time towards feeding hungry people at a soup kitchen or cleaning up the environment by removing any trash or litter, just like King, you will be making a difference in the world that benefits your fellow neighbors.

5. Reflect on the impact that MLK has had on modern society and in your personal life.

Take a moment to think about how different the world would be today, had it not been for the influential figure of Martin Luther King.

A segregated world, drowning in dullness and division. A world lacking the vibrancy of variety. A world where color is feared rather than celebrated.

This is the reason why we grab hands with people who are different from us today. This is why we bask in the fact that a mixed community composed of individuality, acceptance, and love paves the path for a more beautiful world and a brighter tomorrow.
