The Acorn Stairlift FAQ of the Week

Who Invented the Stairlift?

It is believed that the first stairlift was created by an entrepreneur named C. C. Crispin who was from Pennsylvania, US.

He called this invention “the Inclinator,” which was entirely engineered by him.

When Were Commercial Stairlifts Officially Invented?

What we now know as the modern stairlift was officially invented by US entrepreneur C.C Crispen in the 1920s.

Equipped with a folding seat and footrest and gliding up and down the rail on rollers, Crispen’s stairlift was designed to help his friend with polio travel freely between the floors of his home.

Since the invention of the stairlift, countless people have reaped the benefits of regaining their mobility, independence, and freedom.

However, stairlifts have come a long way since the 1920s, and here at Acorn, we believe without a single doubt that our stairlifts are the best on the market.

The Fascinating History Behind the First Recorded Use of the Stairlift

While C. C. Crispen is credited with the invention of the modern stairlift, it turns out that stairlifts have actually been around much longer than we thought.

Recently, historian Dr. David Starkey discovered that the first recorded use of the stairlift actually dates back to the 16th century and is tied to nonother than the larger-than-life king, Henry VIII.

Although this primitive model of his “stair throne” fulfilled the same purpose that modern stairlifts

still do today, Henry VIII’s stairlift maneuvered quite differently.

Rather than gliding along a seamless track for the smooth ride you would expect from an Acorn stairlift, his stairlift functioned through the usage of a pulley system of royal ropes the servants used to hoist the king up to the heavens.
